You can also skip the boat entirely with the scenic drives and boardwalks of Big Cypress National Preserve and Fakahatchee Strand — or find more real swamp closer to town at CREW Bird Rookery Swamp (check its current status first). And if a wild-edge lifestyle appeals, newer communities along Tamiami Trail East like Esplanade by the Islands sit closest to this gateway.

Go in the dry season — and go in the morning
