Moving to Naples from Pennsylvania: Taxes, the Inheritance Tax & Where to Land
General education only — not legal, tax, financial, insurance, or other professional advice. Read the full disclaimer
Pennsylvania sends a steady stream of retirees and snowbirds to Southwest Florida, and Naples is a top destination. Interestingly, the PA-to-Naples case is less about income tax and more about lifestyle and estate planning — PA is already gentle on retirement income. Here’s the honest, Pennsylvania-specific breakdown. (General info, not tax advice.)
The tax math (a nuanced one)
- Pennsylvania: a flat 3.07% income tax — low — though local wage taxes add up in many places (Philadelphia residents pay roughly 3.7% on top). Crucially, PA does not tax Social Security, pensions, or 401(k)/IRA withdrawals taken at retirement age, so retirees often pay little PA income tax already.
- Florida: no state income tax at all.
So the income-tax savings are smaller than from a high-tax state. The bigger PA-specific factor is the inheritance tax — one of the few in the country, with no exemption: 4.5% to children, 12% to siblings, 15% to others (0% to a spouse). Establishing Florida domicile (Florida has no inheritance or estate tax) can remove that on most assets, though PA real estate can still be reached. (Confirm with an estate attorney.)
What your housing dollar buys
Naples generally costs more than most of Pennsylvania, but no winter heating, the lifestyle, and the homestead protections help. Match your budget to the right community — see cost of ownership and current listings.
Getting here
Fly into RSW (Fort Myers), ~35–45 minutes north of Naples: nonstop from Philadelphia (PHL) on American and Frontier (~3 hours) and from Pittsburgh (PIT) on Southwest and Breeze (~2.5 hours). Allegiant also flies Pittsburgh → Punta Gorda (PGD), a smaller airport ~40 minutes north. Or drive I-95/I-75 — roughly 1,200 miles, ~18–19 hours, usually two days.
Where Pennsylvanians tend to land
PA transplants favor gated, amenity-rich, low-maintenance communities and the walkable coast:
- Lely Resort — popular master-planned resort community, public golf, wide price range.
- Esplanade by the Islands — newer Taylor Morrison resort living.
- Fiddler’s Creek — large gated community with championship golf (membership separate).
- Old Naples / Park Shore — walkable and beachfront options.
The honest trade-offs
- Hurricanes and insurance — June–November; budget for premiums and possible flood coverage (flood insurance guide).
- Summer heat and humidity (June–September) is a real adjustment.
- “Season” (Nov–April) means busier roads and restaurants; plan around the weather and seasons.
