Sunset over the Gulf of Mexico — relocating to Naples, Florida from Wisconsin

Wisconsin is part of the deep Great Lakes pipeline into Southwest Florida, and Naples (with Bonita Springs and Marco Island) is a favorite winter base. The Wisconsin tax case is more targeted than dramatic — WI is already friendly on Social Security and estates — so the Florida win lands mostly on retirement-account income. Here’s the honest breakdown. (General info, not tax advice.)

The tax math

  • Wisconsin: a graduated income tax from 3.5% to a 7.65% top rate. WI does not tax Social Security, but it generally taxes pensions and 401(k)/IRA withdrawals (a newer subtraction of up to $24,000/$48,000 helps those 67+, with income limits). WI has no estate or inheritance tax.
  • Florida: no state income tax at all.

So moving doesn’t change the Social Security or estate-tax picture (WI is already favorable there) — the real gain is on pension and 401(k)/IRA income, taxed up to 7.65% in WI and 0% in Florida, plus no tax on wages or one-time gains. Add Florida’s homestead exemption and Save Our Homes 3% cap for primary residents, and net insurance costs, and you get the honest “no income tax + capped homestead” framing. (Confirm with a CPA.)

What your housing dollar buys

Naples is a step up in price from most of Wisconsin, offset by no income tax on retirement withdrawals, no winter heating, and the lifestyle. Match your budget to the right community via cost of ownership and current listings.

Getting here

Fly into RSW (Fort Myers), ~35–45 minutes north of Naples: nonstop from Milwaukee (MKE) on Southwest, Sun Country, and United, about 2.75 hours. Madison (MSN) has only limited seasonal nonstop service, so most Madison trips connect. Allegiant flies Appleton/Green Bay → Punta Gorda (PGD). Or drive — Milwaukee to Naples is roughly 1,420 miles / ~22 hours, usually a two-day trip down I-65/I-75.

Where Wisconsinites tend to land

Wisconsin transplants favor gated, amenity-rich golf/resort and 55+ communities:

The honest trade-offs

  • Hurricanes and insurance — June–November; budget for premiums and possible flood coverage (flood insurance guide).
  • Summer heat and humidity (June–September) sends many seasonal residents north.
  • “Season” (Nov–April) brings traffic and crowds; plan around the weather and seasons.
